When the Eye is Single
This print features the beautiful Sri Yantra, an ancient and complex geometric symbol which has been used for thousands of years. The central figure is composed of nine interlocking triangles connected to each other by common points. There is only one way to create the yantra – the angle and position of each triangle must be exact or the whole harmony of the drawing is thrown off.
The Sri Yantra is of Hindu tradition, and is used often as a symbol of meditation. The square enclosing the circle, and the complexity of the intersecting triangle create movement allowing one’s thoughts to move toward the center, symbolic of focusing on one’s self.
From this comes the connection to the caption of the work “When the eye is single, the whole body is full of light” which comes from the teachings of Jesus Christ on the sermon of the mount, as described in verse 22 of the sixth chapter of Mark.
The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.
The print acts as a spiritual reminder to keep the eye centered on those things that are most important.
