The first Inca ruins on the trail are at Llactapata, also called Patallacta. The stonework is rougher than Machu Picchu, but you can already see the trapezoidal openings and the way the walls sit in the landscape. Sites like this were tambos — rest stations on the royal road — and a reminder that we were walking a highway, not just a hike.
