Francisco Pizarro was a pig farmer from Extremadura.

He had a gift for persuading desperate men to follow him into impossible places.

He convinced a small group of soldiers to cross the Andes, attack an empire of millions, and seize its capital. They did.

He founded the city of Lima and governed, enjoying the spoils of his conquest till his own son led a begrudged group of assailants.

As he fell, stabbed by his attackers, he drew a cross on the floor with his own blood.
