September 5–6. A morning flight from Istanbul to Nevşehir, then Göreme.

The afternoon of the fifth was the Open-Air Museum and the Dark Church, rock-cut chapels with their Byzantine paint still on the walls. Before dawn on the sixth, a balloon over the fairy chimneys.
