A Cosmic Knot
John Parker Dilworth
What is a knot?
A knot is a device used to bind, connect or secure on thing to another.
Just as a knot in a string secures oen thing to another, the symbol of the knot in this work represents the divine connection between our humanity and our spiritual nature.

A knot in each image is connected to the next image, creating a circular connection from creation to death — an endless thread that connects each stage of our lives to the next.

The Cosmic Knot lies at the center of existence. A tiny bundle of pure energy, ignited by the hand of God, brings forth light and darkness, chaos and order.
You played a part in this.

You begin life innocently. Your knowledge increases, you recognize beauty, you become an individual and begin to make your own decisions.
You are an agent unto yourself.
![]()
You were surrounded and protected by unseen guardians. The mysteries of the world are untied before your eyes.
You learn, and begin to forget.
![]()
You embark to fulfill your dreams. You leave behind the things that you need the most.
You begin your journey with no place to go.
![]()
You are lost. Your refractory state prevents you from seeing the light that can guide you.
You are in the labyrinth.
![]()
You've reached your end and tasks are beyond your capacity. You reach deep into your soul, finding hope and faith.
You find that you have not been alone.
![]()
You find another. The communion illuminates your minds, opening doorways which never existed for you alone.
You walk alone together.
![]()
You find joy in something, and make it your life's work. Your craft is ever improving, expanding, and perfecting.
You art becomes inseparable.
![]()
You reach the end of your journey. As your physical eyes begin to shut, those of your soul are opened wide.
Your end is a new beginning
When the body sinks into death, the essence of man is revealed. Man is a knot, a web, a mesh into which relationships are tied

Artist's Notes
"A Cosmic Knot" story and images were created as part of my MFA thesis project at Academy of Art University in 2008.
It represents my deep dive into the knot as a potent mystical and spiritual symbol—a contemporary exploration using digital art to unravel its meanings.
My core intent was to investigate how this ancient form symbolizes our connection to the spiritual, the interplay of order and chaos, and ultimately, how the self, much like Don Marquis' 'knot, in the tangled skein of things,' is woven from chance and change. This project was my way of using the computer as a medium to give form to these profound, often unseen, connections.
On a personal level, this project was transformative for me.
It marked a return to my artistic core after a decade in commercial design, a deliberate effort to find and express my own unique voice.
The knot itself became a metaphor for my own path—the initial fascination, the struggle to understand its 'secrets,' and the eventual realization that the true exploration had to come from within.
The call to find the 'soul of the project' was a pivotal moment, pushing me to shed a purely academic approach and instead infuse the work with my own experiences, spirituality, and search for beauty beyond the superficial.
This process of creating "A Cosmic Knot," with its nine symbolic stages mirroring life's great archetypal events, became intrinsically linked to my own MFA experience: a challenging, illuminating, an...
